The Lakes are big and can be overwhelming so here are a few things to get your trip off to great start

Things to do

Groceries
  • Premier - At the end of the road

    • Sells essentials like milk and other corner shop things along with a mix of pies, pasties and cakes from a variety of local bakeries. Also has wood and kindling for the wood burner

  • Coop and Sainsbury’s Local - Both walkable in Windermere town centre

  • Then Kendal has full sized Sainsburys, Asda and Morrisons

Food and Drink
  • Windermere/Bowness

    • Mission

      • This is almost across the road from the house. Good cakes, food and coffee

    • Homeground

      • Great spot for breakfast or brunch. Their hash browns are a must. But be warned, it’s very popular and if you don’t get there at opening you’ll have to queue

    • Toast

      • Mainly coffee and pastries but has great toasties made with brioche

    • Windermere Jetty museum

      • The museum cafe has a nice selection of meals with great lakeside access with lovely views of the lake. A good spot if you have children and it’s raining too

  • Short drive/bus

    • Force - Ambleside

      • Cafe and restaurant with a terrace on the hill overlooking the lake. Great views

    • Wilfs - Stavely

      • Local cafe with other bakeries, cafes and icecream shops nearby. Great place to start walks and bike rides

    • Bakehouse - Greenodd

      • Breakfast, brunch, lunch along with takeaway cakes, pastries and cake.

    • Swallows and Amazons - near Coniston

      • Little cafe with lake access to coniston.

    • Lakeland food park - near Kendal

      • Collection of local food and drink shops including Rinaldo’s coffee roasters, Plumgarths Farm shop & Cafe and Wagtail Kitchen (pies)

    • Chesters By The River

      • Excellent lunch and cafe options and a good place to start a walk to elter water but parking can be tricky so get there early
